Where are we today? On our way to Maputo, Mozambique

 We are on our way to Maputo.  You probably know that Mozambique has just had a tragedy. I am praying for the people there.  

Over 100 people have died after a ferry sank.  Too many people had crowded onto the boat after hearing a rumor about a Cholera outbreak in their community.  Mozambique is indeed fighting cholera, and we have been warned to be careful about what we eat or drink there.  Even so, it seems that this rumor caused unnecessary panic. The ferry was hit by a tidal wave,

 By Dave: Since we boarded on the 3rd, there have been many rumors and discussions about whether we would still go through the Red Sea as planned.   The cruise line has officially decided that it is too dangerous to stick to our original itinerary.  We will skip India, all of the Middle East including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Jordan (Petra), Greece, Turkey -- including Istanbul and Ephesus, Italy, Spain and Portugal (The Azores).  We are very disappointed to miss these destinations. Instead, we will be going to Male, the Seychelles, Tanzania, Mozambique, Durban and Cape Town, South Africa, Namibia, Ghana, Gambia, Cape Verde, and Puerto Rico.These are interesting places, but we had hoped to immerse ourselves in the ancient culture of places like Istanbul and Ephesus.  We had also arranged visits with members of our churches in places like Mumbai, Singapore, and Dubai.   We had discussed an African tour at a later date, but we might have chosen dif...

Where are we? Approaching the International Date Line

Sunrise from our balcony How do you handle Monday mornings? On the Zuiderdam, we are going to simply skip tomorrow and pass from Sunday night to Tuesday.  There will be no February 12th for us. As we have been sailing west to arrive in the east, we have been going backward on the clock.  Now that we are about to cross the dateline, we will add 24 hours at once. 🤷‍♀️Simple.  Right?  Then why am I so confused?  🤔🤪☺️ Last night, the ship celebrated Chinese or Lunar New Year, complete with traditional foods and lovely red decorations.  Dave is feeling better after the ship clinic gave him antibiotics to clear up a post Covid sinus infection.  Somehow, we both escaped Covid until this year, so we have little room to complain. Where in the world are we today? Maputo!

 In which we get mixed up in 10 beautiful weddings and see the sights of Maputo! What a fun day we had in Mozambique. We started with a visit to the historic train station.  Across the street, at the center of a traffic circle, there is a large statue which serves as a memorial mostly to military figures.  The crowning figure, however, is a woman with a snake.  The story goes that there was a venomous snake which would attack people who had to walk near the tree where it lived. The woman decided to do something about it. She put warm porridge in a pot on her head and walked to where the snake was coiled around a branch.  The snake tried to strike her, but he ended up falling into the porridge and died. After visiting the memorial, we headed to the local market.
