Where are we today? On a slow boat to China, Honolulu Part 2
View of Honolulu from Diamond Head |
When we visited Hilo, we completed the first leg of this 128 day journey. In Honolulu, several people disembarked to make their way home, while others came on board for the next part of the voyage. Most of us are in for the long haul,
We are beginning another long stretch of the Pacific. It will take us 8 days to get to our next stop --Guam.
We went back an hour last night and are going back an hour tonight. We will cross the International Date Line on the 13th.
Yesterday, in Honolulu, I had a craving for Chik Fil A and real southern tea. We headed for the nearby mall, which turned out to be the largest outdoor mall in the US. The food court alone was overwhelming, with many yummy smelling Asian inspired chains I had never encountered. But, we got our taste of the Chik while we had a chance. I got a kick out of the Mahalo sign. That’s something you don’t see in Tennessee Chik Fil A’s.
To hike Diamond Head, you must reserve a time, and we arrived just a few minutes early for our two o'clock appointment. It’s less than a mile from the base tote top, but it’s straight up. The walk includes several sets of stairs and a tunnel. As we climbed, I loved the scenery. It reminded me a little of certain places in California, but with very Hawiian elements.
I elected not to go all the way, but hiked down and hiked back up half way. There were some benches where I sat and enjoyed the sun. I saw a small mammal that I later found out is a mongoose. (I would love to have a mongoose at our cabin to defeat the rattlers. (Just kidding. Sort of.)
Dave made it all the way to the summit, despite having a touch of Covid. He was exhausted, but happy when he came down. While I was waiting for David, a young couple tried to encourage their sleepy toddler to take a few steps and to enjoy the sun. She took a few steps, but just about fell asleep on her feet. Her parents shifted her into a carrier.
We had tossed around the idea of eating dinner in Chinatown, as our sail away was not until 10:30. But, Dave was feeling the hike and the virus, so we dined on ship, instead.
